Know your taxis

Hackney carriage vehicles:

• In Aylesbury, these vehicles are purpose built Hackney Carriage black cabs
• They all have a "Taxi" roof sign
• The plates on the vehicle are white
• They have a taximeter fitted that must be used on all journeys
• They may park at the rank and be hailed in the street
• They are all wheelchair accessible with many benefits for people with disabilities
• There are only 50 licensed taxis working in Aylesbury

Private hire vehicles:

• The plates on the vehicle are yellow
• They must display door signs with “Advance Bookings Only” written on them
• You cannot book with the driver, you must phone and book with the company in advance
• You cannot hail these vehicles (i.e. stick your arm out and wave them to stop)
• These vehicles must not stop on taxi ranks
• If you do not pre-book the vehicle, the journey is not recorded and you are not insured
• The vehicles can be any shape or colour
• There are over 500 private hire vehicles working in Aylesbury Vale
